May Day, or International Labour Day 2021, is just around the corner. The day, which is devoted to workers and laborers all over the world, is also known as International Workers Day or International Labour Day. May Day honors laborers and raises awareness of their rights. Many countries observe International Labour Day on May 1 as a public holiday.
The International Labor Organization, a United Nations body that strives to develop international labor standards, stated in a report released on World Day for Safety and Health at Work that "countries need to put in place sound and resilient workplace safety and health structures that would minimize the risks for everyone in the world of work."
INTERNATIONAL LABOR DAY OR MAY DAY
Labour Day, also known as May Day, recognizes and honors the efforts of laborers all over the world. The roots of Labour Day can be traced back to the nineteenth-century labor union movement in the United States. However, in the United States and Canada, Labour Day is observed on the first Monday of September to honor employees and their families.
In 1889, a coalition of socialist organizations and labor unions in the United States declared May 1 as Workers' Day. This was in commemoration of the Haymarket Riots in Chicago in 1886, when a labor demonstration rally turned violent after a bomb was thrown at the police.
May 1 has traditionally been associated with rural traditional farmer's festivals in Europe, but May Day later became associated with the modern labor movement.
There are various origin stories for May Day or Labor Day in different countries. The first Labor Day celebration in India took place on May 1, 1923, in Chennai. It was established by the 'Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.' The red flag, which represents Labour Day, was flown for the first time on this day. The day is observed to show appreciation for India's workers.
In India, May Day is also known as 'Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas' or 'Kamgar Diwas.'
